| À la fin du mois de novembre 1943, Roosevelt et Churchill se rendirent à Téhéran pour leur première rencontre avec Staline. Le président américain et le Premier ministre britannique étaient déjà tombés d'accord sur un plan d'attaque qui consistait à traverser la Manche et à débarquer en France (opération Overlord). Roosevelt soutenait avec ferveur l'argument selon lequel il fallait exécuter le plan Overlord en 1944, dès que les conditions météorologiques seraient favorables. Churchill pensait, au contraire, qu'il fallait toujours donner la priorité à l'Italie et à de nouvelles offensives en Méditerranée, dans les Balkans ou dans le sud de la France!; mais Roosevelt et Staline s'y opposèrent et l'opération Overlord fut donc prévue pour mai 1944. Le général Eisenhower, choisi pour organiser cette gigantesque opération, fut nommé commandant en chef des forces alliées en Europe et installa son quartier général, le SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters Allied Military Forces) à Londres. |
| At the end of the month of November 1943, Roosevelt and Churchill surrendered in Tehran for their first meeting with Stalin. The American president and the British prime minister had already fallen okay on a plan of attack that consisted in crossing the English Channel and to disembark in France (Overlord operation). Roosevelt sustained with devotion the argument according to which it was necessary to execute the plane Overlord in 1944, as soon as conditions meteorological would be favorable. Churchill thought, on the contrary, that him was necessary to always give the priority in Italy and news offensives in Mediterranean, in the Balkan or in the south of France!; but Roosevelt and Stalin himself opposed there and the Overlord operation was foreseen therefore for May 1944. The general Eisenhower, chosen to organize this gigantic operation, is named commander-in-chief of allied forces in Europe and installed his/her/its general district, the SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters Allied Military Strengths) in London. |
